GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

17

EVENINGS OUT

A North Carolinian's study

of his infamous senator

-by Mark J. Huisman

If there's anyone who should know the Republican senator from North Carolina, Jesse Helms, it's Tim Kirkman. The two men

share the same hometown, upbringing, religious background, education and vocational paths. And both, as Kirkman wryly observes, are obsessed with gay men.

Kirkman's college reunion is the jumping off point for his film Dear Jesse, which is part road trip, part diary, and an attempt to understand his home state's senator, and how two people so seemingly similar could end up being so different.

Tim Kirkman

Although the usual Helms is here, blasting gay rights, AIDS research and arts funding, Kirkman spends more time with regular North Carolinians from mechanics and mothers to poets and pastors.

The result is terrifically insightful and, at times, surprisingly sympathetic. One man giggles after suggesting only death will remove Helms from office. But a 1938 high school paper that called Helms obnoxious brings a different response:

"You were probably a gangly, anxious teenager," Kirkman says, “And when you read that it probably hurt."

THIS IS MY DILEMMA.

Kirkman uses such moments to examine how he came to terms with being gay and the effect it had on friends, lovers and family. And one does get the sense that Kirkman put

a few personal demons to bed here.

But Helms is an even greater mystery, for filmmaker and viewer alike.

Dear Jesse will be screened in Columbus on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23, 7 pm as part of the Wexner Center for the Arts New Documentary series. Wexner Center is located at 1871 Norh High Street. Call 614292-0330 for more information. ✓

I am a woman or man who believes that there IS a God, that Jesus IS the Christ whose life, death and resurrection are the basis for a personal relationship with God and that the Holy Spirit IS ready to daily help me as a follower of Jesus Christ.

I have acknowledged my homosexual feelings and wondered how they fit in with my Christian beliefs.

I am troubled about the anti-homosexual opinions of Christians whom I respect.

NOW, WHAT DO I DO?

The life of a homosexual with a strong Christian commitment can be confusing at best, self-condemning at worst. But genuine Christian faith and homosexual life can be integrated.

Many other gay men and lesbians are on the same journey – living as members of the Body of Christ, worshipping their Lord and Savior, seeking the deeper Christian life, growing in the grace and knowledge of God.

If you are interested in meeting with other like-minded Christians to strengthen each other as members of the Body of Christ, call 216-671-4189 for more information.
